Paolozzi. The furniture in the drawing

room (see page 60) provides a clear

narrative of Sebastian’s background in

design and reads as an account of the

best of late 20th-century design. The

black ‘Wink’ chair by Toshiyuki Kita

for Cassina is an Eighties classic. ‘It

was the first piece I bought as a young

man’ says Sebastian. The ‘Spun’ chair

is by Thomas Heatherwick. An elegant

‘Butterfly’ stool by Sori Yanagi – a

brilliantly simple design from the Fifties

• sits next to the Barber Osgerby ‘Loop’

coee table which was launched in

the Nineties. In the corner an Achille

Castiglioni ‘Arco’ lamp rears up and

pulls the room together.

Upstairs it’s Sebastian’s creations

that dominate. He designed the chest

of drawers to match the bedside tables

in the master bedroom while in the

bathroom the sleek marble shelf that

tops the tongue-and-groove dado is his

work as are the basin and the taps

which he crafted for Villeroy & Boch.

The most contentious issue for the

couple was how to deal with the wide

bay window in their bedroom says
