BEST BET MAY 19 Museum of Boulder
Reopening Despite its rising stock of
restaurants and proximity to gorgeous trails,
Boulder has lacked one crucial attraction: a
general-interest museum worthy of a visit.
That’ll change when the Museum of Boulder
reopens at Broadway and Pine Street. The
much larger digs (7,200 square feet) start
by hosting three interactive exhibits (about
Da Vinci machines, NASA, and the mechan-
ics of sports) as well as a Google-sponsored
makerspace. View all of it for free on opening
day from 1 to 5 p.m.—but make sure to
come back in November for the launch of
the Boulder Experience Gallery, a permanent
installation chronicling the city’s milestones.
Sat 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Museum of Boulder,
2205 Broadway, 303-449-3464,
museumofboulder.org. Free.
SPORTS & RECREATION
MAY 4–6 Fruita Fat Tire Festival Kick off the
mountain bike season in style by demo-ing
top-notch two-wheelers on a portion of Fruita’s
hundreds of miles of epic singletrack. From
the latest lightweight hardtails by Specialized
to Pivot’s race-worthy enduro bikes, you can
sample steeds from 50 of the largest vendors in
the industry. Plus, the street party on Mulberry
Avenue will rage on Friday and Saturday nights,
providing an opportunity to drink brews from Os-
kar Blues Brewery. Fri-Sat 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun 8
a.m.-4 p.m. 18 Road Trailhead, Fruita, 970-858-

  1. $20-$85. Visit fruitafattirefestival.com.

MAY 12 Tommyknocker 12-hour & Mine Shaft
Half In an unusual twist on an ultramarathon,
this race asks competitors to leave their fates
to chance. Runners must blindly pull colored
balls from a bucket to determine which of four
grueling mountain loops—ranging from two to
six miles—they’ll tackle. At the end of each lap,
they’ll repeat the process, racking up as many
miles as they can in a dozen hours. Aid stations
will also be available for weary athletes. Sat 6
a.m.-6 p.m. White Ranch Open Space, 25303
Belcher Hill Road, Golden. Ticket prices vary.
Visit humanpotentialrunning.com.

MAY 13 Mother’s Day 5K & Brunch Active moth-
ers can celebrate their day with brunch on the
run instead of breakfast in bed at this mama-
focused event. Give Mom the chance to pound
the pavement kid-free (childcare is available),
or make it a family affair—there’s a 0.2-mile
kids’ fun run to keep the attention of your little
ones. Along with the exercise, moms will score
tasty breakfast burritos from Mexican restaurant
Santiago’s and the chance to win gear from
Runners Roost. Sun 9:30 a.m. City Park, 17th
Ave. and Colorado Blvd., 303-403-0978. Ticket
prices vary. Visit mothersday5k.com.

MAY 18–20 Pike’s Predicament Adventure Race
In 1806, Zebulon Pike set out to explore the
uncharted regions of the Louisiana Territory,
only to become lost and get captured on
Spanish lands. In this 48-hour-long adven-
ture, you’ll test your navigation skills against
Pike’s as you bike, paddle, and trek your
way through Pike National Forest. Individu-
als or teams of up to four will race through
the wilderness for a reward the hapless Pike
would have relished—a hot picnic-style meal
at a campfire party. Fri-Sun 8 a.m.-noon. Red
Rocks Campground, Red Rocks Campground
Road, Woodland Park, 425-358-0363. $480.
Visit 361adventures.com.

MAY 25–28 Paddlefest A plethora of outdoor
activities—both wet and dry—await at this
kickoff to river season. Paddling enthusiasts
can watch amateurs and pros during competi-
tions featuring challenging white-water tricks.
You can also improve your own technique
through SUP and kayak courses ranging from
novice to advanced. For those who prefer
solid ground, there’s an 8K trail run and half
marathon, a bouldering competition, and
nightly parties with libations from Elevation
Beer Company and Deerhammer Distillery.
Fri-Mon, times vary. 327 E. Main St., Buena
Vista, 719-395-9206. Ticket prices vary.
