Jeonju,

South Korea
The country’s historical
heartland is also an
institution for food. In 2012,
the city was given a UNESCO
City Of Gastronomy honour,
for its focus on traditional
food practices. The ‘Taste
City’ is also the birth place
of the Korean delicacy,
bibimbap. Through the city,
you’ll find variations of the
dish—from conventional
bowls of veggies and red
pepper paste to a roll-up
waffle bibimbap. Hankook
Jib is the go-to place for
the city’s best.
CHOCO PIE Walk around
the city, and chances are, you’ll
spot bright orange carry bags
everywhere. These all come
from the famous PNB Bakery
in Jeonju Hanok Village.
The bakery draws rafts of
visitors, all queuing for a box
of its signature choco pie—two
outer halves made of nutty
chocolate with a centre filled
with cream and strawberry
jam, and a rim dipped in
chocolate. pnb1951.com

NAMBU MARKET
On Fridays and Saturdays,
pop-up street stalls
crowd the 200-year-old
market with seafood, and
local delicacies. Try the
flame-grilled lobster and
blood sausage hot pot.

Lima, Peru
Lima is giving food capitals
like London, New York City,
and Hong Kong, a run for
their gastronomical money.
Peruvian cuisine,
significantly influenced by
Chinese and Japanese
immigrants, is an exciting
amalgamation brought
together by ingredients
sourced from the sea, coast,
jungle, and mountains.
ASTRID Y GASTON
Such is the love among
Peruvians for chef-owner
Gaston Acurio that he is
touted as a future President.
The tasting menu here is a
journey through Lima’s
migrant communities. Must-
tries are the crab macarons
and Peking style guinea pig.

INSTA WATCH

► Virgilio Martinez
(@virgiliocentral), celebrated
chef of the world’s top ranked
restaurant Central, shares

pictures of food from all
across Peru on Instagram.
An episode of Netflix’s Chef’s
Table is entirely dedicated

to him—a testament as to why
his account should
be followed today.

For Koreans, makgeolli
(fermented rice wine)
is not just a beverage but
a feeling. The city’s
makgeolli towns, much
like Spanish tapas bars,
serve up to 20 dishes for
those ordering a kettle
of wine. From roasted
snails to grilled fish and
pork belly, you’ll get
Jeonju’s finest at
Chunnyunnuri Bom,
a bar run by a seniors’
club in the Jeonju
Hanok Village.
