SINTESA GROUP:

WINNING TRANSFORMATION

Indonesia 11

Sintesa Group has been navigating Indo-
nesia’s dynamic business environment for
three generations. From a humble rubber
plantation founded in 1919 by Oey Kim
Tjiang, the grandfather of the current
head and owner, Shinta Widjaja Kamdani,
to the trading company Tigaraksa in 1959,
led by Johnny Widjaja, Shinta’s father.
Then in 1999, Shinta took the reins as
the third generation leader of the family
and transformed the business into a con-
solidated holding company comprised
of four business pillars, namely property,
energy, industrial and consumer prod-
ucts, and introduced the new corporate
image of Sintesa Group. Today, Sintesa
Group has become one of the country’s
major conglomerates, with about 16 busi-
nesses—two of which are listed on the
Indonesian Stock Exchange, PT Tigaraksa
Satria Tbk and PT Tira Austenite Tbk—
annual revenue of more than US$1 billion
and more than 3,000 employees.
The group underwent further trans-
formation in 2009 as a result of a desire
to modernize and to reflect its iden-
tity as a reputable global brand. At the
time, Sintesa Group had revenue below
US$700 million—meaning group revenue
has grown more than 50% in less than a
decade. Having been in operation for
almost a century, Sintesa Group under-
stands that the key for continued growth
is sustainability.

Cognizant of its importance not only
for business but also for the environment
and community, Sintesa Group has estab-
lished a vision 2020: Sustainable Excel-
lence Company. Internally in its business,
Sintesa Group has focused on clean and
renewable energy, while at the same time
making sustainability one of its key per-
formance indicators. Sustainability is what
drives Sintesa Group, not only internally,
but it is also reflected externally in its
activities. This drive prominently started
when Sintesa Group founded the Indo-
nesia Business Council on Sustainable
Development (IBCSD) in 2011 to advocate
to businesses operating in Indonesia the
need to implement sustainable business
practice and to synergize profit with peo-
ple and the planet harmoniously. Together
with all of its members, Sintesa Group is
working on the Indonesia vision 2050 proj-
ect to develop a holistic business view of
