inhabitants of the place – Kabatok. They established their settlements
in the vicinity of the present-day Santo Niño Church. A highly venerated
and renowned pilgrimage destination in the Eastern Visayas region,
this is considered the most important religious site in the province, as it
houses the miraculous image of Santo Niño (infant Jesus) – the patron
saint of Tacloban City. It serves as the object of two native celebrations,
the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival and the Sangyaw Festival.
When typhoon Yolanda, known internationally as Haiyan, struck on
November 8, 2013, it devastated our iconic church. With the expertise of
respected Manila-based architect Dominic Galicia, the initial plans for

Sacrament in the monstrance.
Others who came after the Kabatok people were the Gumoda,
Haraging and Huraw, all of which erected their own settlements at
nearby sites. The Huraw’s domain is the hill where the grand City
Hall now stands. Kankabatok, the name that represents the combined
