Photographers Without Borders sent volunteer
Gita Defoe to Indonesia to photograph the positive
work done by the Sumatran Orangutan Society in
protecting endangered Sumatran orangutans and
their rainforest home.
The lowland forest habitats of Asia's only
great ape are quickly disappearing. They are
being cut down for timber or burned to make way
for oil palm plantations and other agricultural
developments. Today, more than 50 percent of
orangutans are found outside of protected areas,
in forests under management by timber, palm oil
and mining companies.
