Education and Hope
Inheriting a future
Every child has a right to education,
yet the reality in Pakistan and
Afghanistan cannot be further from
this ideal. Years of war, instability
and abject poverty have ravaged
not only the landscape, but also
mindsets, leaving one generation of
illiterate people to succeed the next.
Humanitarian organisations such as
Central Asia Institute are working to
improve the accessibility of schools,
making learning possible for the
unprivileged millions, including girls,
who desire it.

The Beauty of Neutrality
Making carbon a thing of the past
Neutrality is rarely celebrated in
today’s society, unless of course we’re
speaking about carbon. The ideal of a
zero carbon footprint is a mammoth
task that is very difficult to achieve
purely by improving energy efficiency
and consuming fewer resources. But
through carbon offsetting, corporate
organisations and the general public can
compensate for unavoidable emissions
by financing projects that deliver not
just environmental benefits but also
economic and community advantages.

A Second Chance
Healing bodies and souls
As the former director of Chiang
Mai Women’s Prison, Naowart
Thaarisutharat understood better than
most the challenges facing offenders
as their time behind bars finally comes
to an end. Hers was a simple but daring
solution: Empower these troubled
souls to help themselves find purpose,
a reliable income and a newfound
sense of pride and self-esteem.
