HAKONE KOWAKIEN YUNESSUN SPA
Japan

Spas are relaxing, but can they
also be fun? You bet they can.
Uproarious fun. At Hakone
Kowakien Yunessun Spa in
Hakone, a spa bath could mean
sitting under gently dripping sake,
or taking a dip in green tea, sitting
neck deep in red wine, or getting
dunked in coffee. The main spa

area, named ‘The God’s Aegean
Sea’, no less, has smaller massage
pools within a large pool. The
theme park concept of water slides
has been modified for spa use here,
as Yunessun’s ‘Rodeo Mountain’
sends guests screaming happily
down three chutes – all with heated
water, so no worries in winter.

ONDA SPA
Costa Rica

There aren’t too many spots left on
Earth where one might experience
‘pura vida’ or the ‘pure life’. Onda
Spa at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo
Resort is one of those rare places, in
the Papagayo region of Costa Rica.
Three of its nine treatment rooms are
outdoors – a guest drifts into a state of
complete peace listening to birdsong

and the curated music inspired by
traditional rhythms. The spa rooms
offer splendid views of Culebra Bay,
one of the most spectacular parts of this
Central American nation with its lovely
beaches and greenery. The signature
treatment is the ‘Onda Cambio’, a
complete and customised therapy based
on each guest’s specific needs.
