SUN TAN
Due to constant exposure to the sun, skin gets
tanned. A sun tan is actually the body’s defense
mechanism against strong sunlight. But then sun-
burn in severe forms can be really harmful for the
skin. It results in redness, peeling and itching.

SOLUTION A sunscreen, when applied, no
matter how high the SPF, will protect the skin
from the detrimental effects of UV rays, but not
against a tan. Despite that, the use of sunscreens
is essential to prevent skin damage. Also, intake of
oral antioxidants and 1,000 milligram of Vitamin C
every day will help.
Choose light-coloured clothes since they deflect
the sun’s rays. Also, wear broad-rimmed hats, sun
glasses and, if possible, carry an umbrella.
Additionally, make sure you get facials
regularly since they make skin look radiant by
eliminating dead skin cells, improving uneven
skin tone, rehydrating and restoring the skin’s
suppleness. De-tanning and exfoliating the skin
should be the primary goal of a facial treatment,
besides rejuvenation.
Aloe vera soothes the skin, so it can be applied
to skin that is tanned and also on rashes to get relief
from itching.
A quick home remedy – grate three peeled
cucumbers and grind to a paste with 4–5 almonds.
Refrigerate and apply the cool mask on tanned or
sun burned skin to help soothe the skin as well as
remove the tan.

OILY SKIN
During summer, your body
perspires to bring your body
temperature down. This in turn
triggers the sebaceous glands
to produce more oil (sebum)
to keep your skin moisturised.
The sebum and accumulation
of dead skin cells block pores,
which results in comedone and
acne formation.

SOLUTION Take two
tablespoonsful of yogurt, a
few drops of lemon juice and

a pinch of turmeric powder.
Make a smooth paste and apply
it on the face. Rinse off after
20 minutes. The pack helps
dry the acne as well as lighten
the marks. You could also mix
about two teaspoonsful of fresh
tomato juice with a few drops of
lemon juice. Apply the solution
to your face at least once a
day, allow it to dry and then
wash off. This will help control
sebum production, but at the
same time, won’t make your
skin too dry.

PIGMENTATION &
PATCHY SKIN
Excessive exposure to the
sun could give rise to a photo
allergic reaction also known
as polymorphic light eruption
(PMLE) on the exposed
areas of the body, and lead to
pigmentation and patchy skin.

SOLUTION Avoid direct
sunlight as much as possible.
Apply a sunscreen with SPF 20
or 30 and repeat the application
every two-three hours. Wear
appropriate clothing that covers
the exposed areas of the body to
protects them from sunlight.
An easy home cure is the
potato pack. Cut a potato in

half and finely grate it to
extract its juices. Spread this
paste on your skin, allow it
to dry and then rinse off with
water. Potato has natural
bleaching properties that
will help lighten pigmented
patches. Continue using this
pack twice a day for several
weeks, or until you achieve the
desired results.
