How can I boot multiple

operating systems from

one USB stick?

Q

Is there any free software you can recommend that
can multiboot different operating systems (OS)
from a single USB stick? Rufus works well, but
only offers a single operating system on a single USB stick,
requiring a number of USB sticks to run more than one OS.

Your best option is a free tool called YUMI –
Multiboot USB Creator (www.snipca.com/41778),
which makes it easy to create a bootable USB flash
stick containing several different ISO files, including Linux
and Windows installers. YUMI offers two different versions,
but the most versatile – which supports both BIOS and
UEFI booting – is YUMI UEFI, which you can download
directly from http://www.snipca.com/41779. This version requires
your USB stick to be formatted as FAT 3 2, and will offer to
format your drive
using that file
system if it’s
currently NTFS.
When you run
YUMI UEFI (it
doesn’t require
installation), select
your USB stick
in the ‘Step 1’
dropdown menu
(^1 in our screenshot)
and the first
operating system
you want to boot in the Step 2 menu^2. If that OS isn’t listed
(Windows 11 isn’t, though Windows 10 is) choose ‘Try
unlisted ISO’. Browse to the ISO file for that operating
system – YUMI helpfully provides download options for
many systems, or you can get the ISO from the developer’s
website (for example, Windows 11 from http://www.snipca.
com/41780), then click Create^3.
Click ‘Yes’ to confirm and YUMI UEFI will add the
operating system’s ISO file to your USB stick, so you can
boot it from there. Repeat this process for all the operating
systems you want to use.

RECOVERY TOOL

UNINSTALLER

WinfrGUI 1.
http://www.winfr.org
What you need: Windows 10 or 11

Many ‘free’ tools for
recovering deleted files
charge you to restore
the items they find, or
limit how many you can
rescue. WinfrGUI is a new
program with no such
restrictions, allowing
you to recover unlimited
photos, videos, documents and ZIP files for free. It’s based
on Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery app (www.snipca.
com/41772), providing a friendly front-end to that tool’s
rather baffling command-line interface. Simply select the
drive or partition you want to search for lost files, choose
either a Quick or Deep scan, then click the Start Recovery
button (see screenshot). WinfrGUI saves all recovered files
to a folder on the specified drive and lets you click View
Recovered Files to browse them. To speed up scans and view
more relevant results, click the Advanced Settings button
on the home screen and select the type of file you want to
restore, the folders to look in and part of the file name.

Wise Program Uninstaller 3.0.
http://www.snipca.com/
What you need: Windows 7, 8.1, 10 or 11

The latest version of
this excellent free
program for removing
unwanted software
from your PC applies
two significant and
welcome improvements.
First, the interface has
been redesigned to
ditch Wise Program Uninstaller’s ‘top-bottom’ layout in
favour of a new ‘left-right’ version. This makes it similar to
the Settings app in Windows 10 and 11 and much easier to
switch between programs you’ve installed yourself, built-in
Microsoft apps and hidden system components. Second, it’s
now possible to uninstall browser extensions from Chrome,
Firefox, Edge and (somewhat archaically) Internet Explorer.
This is a feature you rarely find in rival tools and saves you the
hassle of opening each browser to remove add-ons you no
longer need. Particularly useful is the ability to select multiple
items and uninstall them all in one go, by clicking the green
button in the top-right corner (see screenshot).
