ORTER

Mitsuhiro Matsuda, who died in 2008
at the age of 7 4, founded his fashion
house in Tokyo in 1967. He was a
pioneering, cutting-edge designer
who became one of the Tokyo Six,
alongside fellow trailblazers Junko
Koshino, Yukiko Hanai, Isao Kaneko,
Takeo Kikuchi and Kansai Yamamoto,
founding Tokyo’s first official fashion
week in 1974. He gained notoriety for
melding his love of architecture with
fashion, while his progressive,
cutting-edge designs also saw him
blur the boundaries between art and
fashion. Photographers such as Bruce
Weber and New York artist Nan
Goldin worked with Matsuda as his
designs sat well with the creative
aesthetic of the Big Apple in the
1980s and ’90s.
Matsuda became best known for
his eyewear and, as well as boasting
a fashion-forward, tech-savvy look,
each pair of sunglasses go through
a complex, rigorous development
process that can take up to 250
steps to perfect with the craft work
of 13 artisans, all based in the
eyewear workshop of Sabae, Japan.
Made from gold-tone titanium and
navy acetate, these glasses provide
100% UV protection and are rich with
retro appeal that recalls the aviator
look of the late 1950 s.
