clappedeyes on, the Sonos Move sits
comfortably nextto the rest of the range
despite being way more rugged. ere are
threebuttonson the back for setup, power and
connectivity, and controlson the top to changevolume,
mute, skip tracks and turn Alexa or Google on and off.
It is set up via, and runs on, the same app as all other
Sonos speakers. It can thus access all the same streaming
services as anySonos speaker.It also supports AirPlay2,
and has your choice of Alexa or Google Assistant on board.
e Moveis not waterproof but it is waterand dust
resistant to an IP56 rating.at means it canput up with
heavyrain for a limited period, but not total immersion in
water. As far aswe canmake out, you canput it ina
humid bathroomor take itto the beach so long asyou
keep it out of salt water and don’t literally buryit inthe
sand (which we’re guessing you wouldn’t do).
Its batterylifeis 10hours of music playback, with a
power-saving mode keeping it alivefor fivedays if you
don’t use it. e batteryis user-replaceable,albeit with
the use of a screwdriver, and you canget replacement
batteries direct from Sonos.
e Movehas either apleasing heft toit or is way
heavier than most portable speakers, depending on your
viewpoint. e ‘handle’ – a large recess onthe back – is
comfortable and easy tograb, however.Whileyou can quibble about the overall portabilityof
the Sonos Move, the genius of it is that it sounds and acts
just likeanyother Sonos speaker,but one that canventure
outdoors. Audio quality is comparable to the Sonos One
when you’reon Wi-Fi and itdoesn’t lose too much
definition when you gooutside and switch to Bluetooth.
As with many Sonos speakers, you can even pairtwo
Sonos Moves into a stereo pair, although only over Wi-Fi.
As the Moveis not designed to stay in one place, there’s
a nifty feature on board: Automatic TruePlay. is
re-calibrates the speaker everytime a built-in
accelerometer tellsit that it’s been moved. Alexa’s
far-field mics set about analysing the sound bouncing
back to it from walls and furniture, and adjuststhe sound
to suit. e resultsare genuinely impressive.
e Moveremains atruly excellent speaker. If you’rein
the market for a weather-resistant, rugged speaker that
can also perform just like an indoorSonos speaker – and
doesn’t look so weather-resistant and rugged thatit
