Boulat's photos were instantly
recognisable for their witness to
human folly and courage

One woman stood outside a mosque,
asking β€œCan I go in?”. She did not know
what lay behind those doors, but as she
was ushered into a stark room, she saw two
women bathing the body of a 12-year-old
girl in preparation for her burial. Behind this
photo, and others capturing the Iraq invasion
between February and April 2003, is the late
French photojournalist Alexandra Boulat
