LEFT A domestic cow glances at an adult
male feeding on a dead horse – wolves
will take any available prey. Researchers
monitor tracks and use radio-collars to
learn more about their behaviour, so that
they can educate the people in the region
about the best ways to minimise risk and
ensure peaceful co-existence.

A lone wolf has a poor chance of survival,
because hunting large prey can only be done in a
pack. Here three members greet each other after
a night hunt. Their roles in the pack are defined
through play and confrontation, and only rarely
through fighting. In Europe wolves are more likely
to hunt at night in order to avoid people.
