I
had half a mind to make this month’s cover line “City,
or not City?” in celebration of – but with apologies to
- William Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his
death... before groaning inwardly at such an excruciatingly
glib pun and casting it aside.
Shame though, because it sums up this month’s cover
story perfectly: in “Far from the madding crowd”, we
deliberately skirt the downtown density of central Hong
Kong to highlight alternative accommodation in the
SAR’s lesser known urban areas, surrounded as they are
by mountains covered in subtropical jungle. Many visitors
to Hong Kong see only the forests of skyscrapers on the
Kowloon Peninsula or Hong Kong Island’s north shoreline,
but there’s so much more to the territory than that... turn
to page 28 to find out.
Another of this issue’s stories celebrates the relationship
between urban development and nature in a different way.
In Seoul, the restoration of an ancient stream that had been
built over has resulted in a nature-filled linear parkway
that passes right through the Korean capital’s central
business district, allowing city workers to relax in peaceful
surroundings (“A river runs through it”, p42).
Relaxation could be a theme for many of this issue’s
stories, whether in premium seating on aircraft (“The future
of first class”, p38), on an incentive trip to South Africa
(“African allure”, p48), in colonial splendour in the Mekong
Delta (“Mother of rivers”, p66) or at a Barcelona tapas bar
(“Catalonian to the core”, p78).
There’s just room for me to get one more plug in for our
Reader Poll, which will close at the end of this month. It’s a
great way to reward those travel industry players who give
you the most satisfaction, and an opportunity to win some
special prizes, so please participate if you haven’t already.
Good luck, and remember to make relaxation part of your
travel plans!
