Danny Rose Brings ‘Play Me!’ To Guangzhou

International Light Festival

CHINA: In what was the largest ever visual
and lighti ng spectacular witnessed by an
audience of eight million at the fourth
annual Guangzhou Internati onal Light
Festi val, French multi media arti sts, Danny
Rose provided their Play Me! interacti ve
and immersive 3D architectural projecti on
mapping experience.

Play Me! transformed the façade of a
traditi onal style Cantonese Qilong building
constructed for the Festi val and centred on a
kilometre long esplanade in the Flower City,
the largest public space in Guangzhou, in
Guangdong province, South China.

This was the fi rst year that Danny Rose has
presented their artwork at the Guangzhou
Internati onal Light Festi val. Danny Rose
specialises in interacti ve multi media and
architectural projecti on mapping content and
services to light festi vals globally, including
the multi -award winning Vivid Sydney.

“The fi rst day of the event welcomed over
a million visitors. The enti re public space in
front of Play Me! was packed out by excited
audiences,” said Sergio Carrubba, director
and designer of Danny Rose, the design team
for this project. “A festi val highlight, Play Me!
from Danny Rose incorporated local Canton
themed visual and interacti ve elements
through a series of massive ‘musical
sculptures.”

“Each ‘sculpture’ represented a family of
musical instruments, which the audience
‘play’ in real-ti me just using hands and body.
The audience was able to change colour, light
shape and sound in front of festi val-goers.”

Ultra high-resoluti on projectors were used to
project content onto the custom-built façade
of a traditi onal Qilong building.

Play Me! was made possible using powerful
3D real-ti me soft ware and rendering engine
that manages interacti vity and high-quality
interacti ve graphics. A Microsoft Kinect
moti on capture system intercepted the
body's movements. Danny Rose custom
created a special soft ware that allowed for
the audience to interact with Play Me! just
using a combinati on of hand
and body movements.

The event was themed
‘Crossover + Canton’ that
took visitors on a journey
through traditi onal to modern
themes. It is the largest
light festi val in China and is
organized by Ruifeng Culture
and Communicati on Company
and presented by The People’s
Government of Guangzhou
Municipality.

Wang Ruixiang, Festi val Director said: “We
were delighted to welcome Danny Rose as
a guest arti st. Play Me! masters a simple
and interacti ve urban interpretati on of
Guangzhou and the charm of Guangfu
culture enabling local people to interact
with the art. It has proved to be extremely
popular.”

Synonymous with Cantonese culture,
the projecti on surface for Play Me! was
constructed for the Festi val and painted
white to become a perfect video projecti on
surface. It was based around a Guangzhou
Qilou or arcade style building. These narrow
buildings are traditi onally narrow and three
or four storied. A protruding structure or
arcade has a balcony with intricately carved
ceilings that usually faces a street.

The Guangzhou Qilou buildings became
popular in the early 1930s, which were
rebuilt from the traditi onal Cantonese
residenti al buildings, locally known as the
Bamboo Tube House or ‘Zhutong Wu’.
