B. Dortmund
Now in his third
season with BVB
following a move
from Swiss club
Luzern, the teenage
striker has been
amassing goals by
the crateful. Could
the Swiss U19 ace
be the “new Erling
Haaland”? On the
basis of his towering
presence, intense
competitiveness and
hunger for goals,
the comparison
makes sense.

Javier CURRAS

Atletico Madrid
Graduates of the
Atleti youth ranks
can rest assured
that the club will
not ignore them.
This season, Diego
Simeone called up
no fewer than14
ex-academy pupils,
and attacking
midfielder Curras
could soon be one
of that happy band.
Sumptuous ball
skills, lashings of
invention, difficult
to dispossess and
a proven scorer,
he is especially
menacing from
direct free-kicks.

Paris Saint-Germain
The talented teenage Dutchman,
an attacking midfielder with wonderful
close control, a fine range of pass and
an innate ability to find space between
the lines, has made a few cameo
appearances for the PSG first team
this season. But will he stay on at the
Parc des Princes? The Netherlands
U19 international’s contract is about
to expire and he may choose to look
elsewhere for more playing time.

Real Madrid
Outstanding Morocco-born stopper
currently featuring for Spain’s U19s. A
robust force of nature, determined, quick
and technically very proficient. Extremely
marketable: good quality left-footed centre-
backs are in short-supply these days. Raul,
the boss of Real’s reserves, is a fan, so was
ex-coach Zinedine Zidane, who allowed
him to train with the seniors on occasion.

Liverpool
Impressive midfield all-rounder, who has
made astonishing progress in recent times.
For various Liverpool academy sides, he
has tended to sparkle as a technically-
accomplished playmaker. But on breaking
intoJurgen Klopp’s first team, he showed
another side to his game – that of the
busy, aggressive defensive midfielder, as
displayed in the 2-2 draw with Spurs in
December.Joined the Reds aged seven.

Dynamo Kyiv
Amazingly the Ukraine U21 keeper has
now appeared in three of the last four
UEFA Youth League campaigns, looking
the part in every one with his agility, strong
hands, composure, speed off his line and
sweeper-keeper ability. In 2020-21, when
Dynamo didn’t take part in the competition,
he made his Champions League debut
instead, filling in brilliantly for No.1 Georgiy
Bushchan in a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona.

Midtjylland
Versatile young midfielder capable
of bringing poise, vision, industry and
intelligence to any engine room slot:
enforcer, playmaker (deep-lying or
advanced) or in box-to-box-mode.
Of southern Italian lineage, the
teenager is certainly not bereft of
leadership qualities either, often
captaining the Midtjylland U19s. A
current Denmark U19 international.

Benfica
Dominant centre-
back blessed with
excellent aerial
ability, positional
awareness, powers
of recovery and
comfort on the ball.
Expertly calls the
back-line shots for
Young Benfica, a
none-too-easy task
in a defensive unit
that plays such a
high line. Has played
for Portugal at all
levels from U15 to
U20, often as the
latter’s skipper.
