herretirementin2004.Shealsoservedas
editoroftheByzantineCollectionPublica-
tions.
Herpassionforarcheologicalfieldworkwas
ignitedbyatriptoEphesusin1963,where
majorexcavationswereunderway;thisled
hertoworkinexcavationsinOldCity,Jeru-
salem,andBargala,Yugoslaviaandvarious
sitesinCyprus.Duringhertenure,sheand
herco-curatorsestablishedadocentser-
viceatDumbartonOaks,andtheCollection
begantomountsmallscholarlyexhibitions.
Professionally,shewaselectedtwicetothe
GoverningBoardoftheByzantineStudies
ConferenceandwaselectedtotheU.S. Na-
tionalCommitteeforByzantineStudiesin
1982.Herworkasbothcuratorandscholar
washighlyrespectedbycolleaguesallover
theworld.SusanwasamemberoftheSul-

Giacomothereafter,formallyimmigratedto
theUnitedStates.GiacomoandVitastart-
edtheirmarriagein Arlington,Virginia,later
movedtoCampSprings,Marylandandfi-
nallymovedtoOlney,Maryland,wherehe
livedfor 38 years,inahouseheadored,as
it backedtoasoccerfieldandhadenough
landforhimtobuildaprolificgarden.During

hislifetime,Giacomoworkedasatelevi-
sionrepairman,soccerreferee,andsoccer
coach.Heis precededin deathbyhismoth-
er,Virginia,Father-in-Law,RosarioArcidi-
aconoandMother-in-law,TinaArcidiacono.
Aloverof“allthingsItalian,”onanygiven
dayGiacomocouldbefoundwatchingsoc-
cerandeatingpasta.Hemaintainedasig-
nificantsupplyofpastaathome,locatedin
whathisfamilycalled“thepastabunker.”

dren.
FredGarmanservedintheArmyfrom 1951
to1975,retiringasaColonelafteranac-
complished career.During theVietnam
War, heservedasCommanderofthe1st
Battalionofthe46thInfantryRegimentof
theAmericalDivision.Duringthe 1968 Tet
Offensive,hesavedthelivesofmanyof
hissoldiers,earningtheSilverStar.Inaddi-
tiontotheSilverStar,hewashonoredwith
manyotherdistinguishedmedalsincluding

theCombatInfantryBadge,LegionofMer-
it,DistinguishedFlyingCross,Air Medal5th
Device,andBronzeStarwithValor.
AnotherofCol.Garman’snotableaccom-
plishmentswhileservingintheArmywas
hisdevelopmentofthemodernday“Op-

ning,GA.
FredthenmovedtoCookeville,TN,withhis
family,whereoneofhissonshadearneda
scholarshiptoattendcollege.InCookeville,
Fredbeganasecondcareerinhotelman-
agement.HelatermovedtoFloridawhere
hestartedhisownhotelcrisismanagement
company,savinghotelsacrosstheUnited
Statesfromgoingunder.Inaddition,he
wrotethefirstHotelSecurityManual,used
todaybymanylargehotels.
Fredis predeceasedbyhisfirstwife,Janice
Vrabel,andtheirsonJay. Fred’sburialin
ArlingtonNationalCemeteryispendingan
assigneddate;however,hewill beburiedin
thenotableSection1ofArlingtonwithhis
son.

thruvariousforeigncountrieswhileworking
forResearchTravelinRockville.Shemade
manyfriendsthroughherdifferentchurch
affiliations,includingEpiscopalandUnited
Methodistchurches,andmostrecently,the
Inter-faithChapelinLeisureWorld.Kathy
willbemissedbyhermanyfriendsshemet
asavolunteerwiththeMedStarMontgom-
eryMedicalCenter.Sheworkedindifferent
partsofthehospitalfor 20 plusyears,but
hermostsignificantaccomplishmentwas
herknowledgegainedasavictimofthe
cancerdiseaseandherabilitytopassinfor-
mationalongtoothers.Asafinaltributeto
theworldofmedicine,Kathydonatedher
bodytotheStateAnatomyBoardofMary-
land.Hercontributionwillhelpanuntold
numberofpeopleintheirfightagainstthe
deadliestdisease,Cancer.Amemorialser-
