POSTCARDS

The Okavango Delta floods each year, reaching its peak during the dry Botswana winter, attracting wildlife from miles around

The supervolcano beneath Lake Toba erupted some 70,000 years ago, causing global temperatures to fall by up to 5°C

This picture was taken on the last
day of my stay in the Okavango
Delta. I’d spent my time camping
and going on walking safaris,
seeing zebras, giraffes, hippos
and elephants. It was the most
incredible experience: the stars,
simple existence, no running
water, no facilities, cooking on an
open fire. We were on a evening
ride in a mokoro boat to watch
the sun set over the delta. I
battled mosquitos to get this shot.
The silhouette of the poler
looked beautiful in the reflection
on the still water.

My friends were visiting me in
North Sumatra for the first time
and I wanted to show them
Lake Toba. It was also my first
time visiting the lake at this
time of day, with the sun just
beginning to set. We went to
the north side of Toba, and
there were not many visitors
left, which gave us more
freedom to explore and to find
the perfect spot to capture this
beautiful lake. It looked so
peaceful, with the low golden
light hitting the water and
hills. It was very special for me.
