MAKE IT HAPPEN
Kamakura is best accessed from
Tokyo, which is accessible via direct
flights on All Nippon Airways (from
US$309; ana.co.jp) or Japan Airlines
(from US$443; jal.com) from
Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. There
are various JR commuter trains from
Narita Airport that offer direct
service to Kamakura Station. From
Haneda Airport, take the Keikyu Line
Airport Express and change at
Yokohama Station to switch to the
JR Yokosuka line that stops at
Kamakura Station.

From a quick walk around the temple
grounds, one can also see many Jizo statues
lining the area. These Jizo statues, in the
image of monks, are placed by parents to
pray for offspring that were prematurely
lost to miscarriages, stillbirth or abortion.
Individual Jizo statues are displayed for a
period of a year before they are removed. It
is said that approximately 50,000 Jizo
statues have been place at Hase-dera since
World War II.
