most interesting of his recent novels, the story of
a writer who discovers that his current project is
being written even without his participation, a
device Hutson develops effectively and with con-
siderable suspense. For the most part, however,
the original imagery and powerful storytelling in
the author’s early work appear to have given way
to formulaic plots and slight variations of previ-
ously published work, which is particularly unfor-
tunate given his early promise. His science fiction
horror novel Slugs(1987) was produced as a mo-
tion picture.
