few times in the cameo role of
“fish head salesperson”—clear-
ly a status leap for a mereau-
thor.
OK, it’s true:Warburton is
just pretend pretending to be
Lemony Snicket: Handler is the
real pretend Snicket and has
done belatedadap tive justice to
his own creation after the
bloated 2004 feature film with
Jim Carrey as CountOlaf. Han-
dler’s screenplay is among the
stars of theNetflix version,
replicatingwhathas made the
13 “UnfortunateEvents” books
resonate with bothchildren
and adults: astory andcharac-
ters created with an under-
standing that kids are more
sophisticated than kiddy lit
often gives them credit for
being, and thatadults never
completely leave a lo ve for silly
humor in their past.
The basic plot is simple
enough:The Baudelaire or-
phans will have access to an
enormous fortune onceViolet
reaches theage of maturity, and
the wily, evil CountOlaf (Neil
Patrick Harris) is ready to stop
at nothing toget his bony
hands on the loot. Although he
is an irredeemably badactor,
Olaf is able to fooladults into
believing he is several other
people as one scheme after
another is foiledby the chil-

dren’s clear-eyed intelligence.

His impersonations include

Stephano, an assistant herpe-

tologist toMontgomeryMont-

gomery(Aasif Mondvi), sailor

CaptainSham and zaftig recep-

tionistShirley St. Ives, among

others.The onlyway thechil-

dren canget the adults to be-

lieve all of these people are

reallyOlaf is to reveal the tattoo

of an eye on his ankle.But even

that is more difficult thanit

appears.

The hilariously painful puns

and literary references, both

obscure andobvious, comprise

the devilish details that bring

the newadap tation to life.

Handler has tossed in a few

more recent references, like

Uber, just tokeep thefan pa ge

scribes busy for awhile.

Harris is insufferably great

as Olaf in all his guises.In fact,

he doesn’t just offer one great

performance:He offers one

after another, each one graced

by exquisite detail, voicing

CaptainSham like Sean Con-

nery with ill-fittingdentures

(keep an ear out for the pro-

nunciation of theword “sit”),

swit ching seamlessly from his

Olaf voice to the differently

accented speech of, say, Stepha-

no, making hisown features

morerubbery than the pros-

theticsapplied to hisface.

The young actors playing the

children are equallygood. Of

course, theircharacters are

moreadult than anyactual

adults, butHynes, Presley and

Weissman provide the heart of

the story withoutever becom-

ing cloying. Presleygets the

best “lines,” althoughshe’s too

young to speak: Sunny’s“com-

mentary” is translated insubti-

tles that are among the funniest

lines of theshow.

Also contributing excellent

work in supporting roles are

AlfreWoodard, as thechil-

dren’s terminally terrifiedAunt

Josephine(she’s most afraid of

real estate brokers —clearly a

nod toHandler’s Bay Area

roots), CatherineO’Hara as

mad optometrist Dr. Georgina

Orwell (literary pun alert),Joan

Cusack as Justice Strauss, and

K. Todd Freeman as the banker

Mr. Poe.

Warburton make an effec-

tively droll narrator,stepping

into the scenes like a latter-day

Rod Serling. Barry Sonnen-

feld’s direction is just a tad

listless in the early episodes,

but picks up appropriately

midway through.

“UnfortunateEvents” is not

only binge-worthy, it’s binge-

demanding.Whetheryou’re a

kid or just achild at heart,

you’ll be giggling somuchat

the mock-melodramatic high

jinks of each episode, you’ll go

right on to the next.That last

thingyou’ll want to do is to

“look away” from“A Series of

UnfortunateEvents.”
