SUDOKU PUZZLE

Completethe grid sothat
every row, colu mn and 3-by-3
boxhas every digit,1to9.

East wonthe opening spade leadwiththe aceand
returned the nine of spades. Southwonwithhis king
and tookamomenttop lan the play. He hadnine top
tricks, but both hearts andclubs were blocked. He
could leadaclubtot he ace, come back to his hand
with aheart, and cashthe king andqueen ofclubs. He
would succeed if the jack and 10 ofclubs both fell, or if
the hearts split3-3.Both of thosechanceswere against
the odds.
South finallycame onaplan thatwas foolproof.
He cashed the three highhearts in his hand, crossed
to dummywiththe aceofc lubs, and cashed theaceof
hearts.He exiteddummywithalow diamond.Thede-
fense could takethree diamond tricks, but theywould
have to put South back in his handeventuallytot ake
his remaining black suit winners.
East’s spade returnat tricktwo wasnormal, but
note howaclubshift, instead, would have helped the
defense.South would have no sure-trickline of play.
Declarer might well cross to his hand withaheart and
leadalow clubfrom his hand, hoping fora4-3 split
in clubs andablockage in diamonds. This would give
the defenseachance to prevail, but theywould have to
cashtheir three diamond tricks immediately. That’s not
so easyonthis deal, sokudostot hem if they figure out
howtodoit.
