foundingdocuments:... Yes,
we can,” he said,voicing the
familiar cadence fromhis
first elec tion.“Yes, we did.
Yes, we can.”
The address was the lat-
est entry in an occasional
tradition of outgoingcom-
manders inchief that has
produced someof the most
memorable speeches in
presidential history, includ-
ing George Washington’s
farewell and Dwight D.
Eisenhower’swarningabout
the rise of the military-in-
dustrialcomplex.
Obamawas mindful of
the apprehension his follow-
ers are feeling ahead of the
inauguration of Trump,
elected on promisesto crack
downon immigration,scru-
tinize Muslims in theU.S.
andchallenge what he de-
ridedas “political correct-
ness.”
The president triedto
soothe thei r concerns by
noting that a transfer of
power is a hallmark of an ad-
vanced society.
“I committed to Presi-
dent-electTrumpthat my
administration would en-
sure the smoothest possible
transition,just asPresident
Bush did for me,” he said.
“Because it’s up to all o fus to
make sure our government
can help us meetthe many
challengeswe still face.”
He acknowledged the
moment without dwelling
on Trump. Instead, Obama
framed such 21st century
challenges as growing in-
equality, terrorism and
interconnectivityaspartofa
profound shift in theglobal
order.
“These forces haven’t
just tested our security and
prosperity, but our democ-
racy as well,” he said. “And
how we meet these chal-
lenges ... will determine our
future.”
He demanded modern
solutions, calling fora “new
socialcompact” that guar-
anteed education forchil-
dren,accessto unions for
workers anda wide safety
net.
“If we don’t create oppor-
tunity for all people,the dis-
affection and division that
has stalled our progress will
only sharpen in years to

come,” he said.
Finally, Obama called for
areentry into civic engage-
mentand decried thetend-
ency of Americansto “re-
treat into our own bubbles.”
“We have to try harder, to
start withthe premise that
each of our fellow citizens
loves thiscountry just as
muchaswedo;thattheyval-
ue hard workand family like
wedo;thattheirchildrenare
just as curiousand hopeful
and worthy of love as our
own.”
And hewarned of democ-
racy’s fragility but under-
scored the uniquerole of the
U.S. as a beaconof freedom.
“Rivals like Russia or
China cannot match our in-
fluence around theworld —
unlesswe give up whatwe
stand for andturn ourselves
intojustanotherbigcountry
that bullies smaller neigh-
bors.”

Obama’s final bigevent
wascraftedas moreof arally
thana speech, with the pres-
ident striding onto the stage
to the strains of his cam-
paign anthem, “City of
Blinding Lights,”and de-
partingwithhisfamilyto the
frenzied applause of18,
people in at tendance.
After he leaves office,
Obama plansto take timeto
“quiet” himself, saidValerie
Jarrett,a longtime advisor
and familyfriend. He wants
Trumpto have space to op-
erateand won’tcommenton
relatively small devel-
opments,friends say.
He wants to give Trump
“roomto do hishomework,”
Jarret t said.
Yet Obamaals o wants to
keep an open lineof commu-
nication with Trump, who
aidesthinkmaywantto con-
sult with him as the last per-
son to do thejob. Since

Trumpwas elected, Obama
has abandoned his cam-
paign season criticism of
Trump and focused publicly
on the importance of a
smooth transition.
Still, if something trou-
bles him, he hastold friends,
he may speak out. OnTues-
day night, he demonstrated
for the world — and, per-
haps, for Trump— that he
canstillcommandtheatten-
tion of the American public.
He is leaving office with high
favorable ratings and, per-
hapsjust as important, has
honed his ability to connect
with the voters of the
Obamacoalition.
Obama calledon white
Americans to remember
that the effects of slavery
andJim Crow didn’t sud-
denly vanish with the social
advancements of the 1960s,
“that when minority groups
voice discontent,they’r e not

just engagingin reverse rac-
ismor practicingpolitical
correctness.”
Conversely, he said,
blacks and other minorities
must think about the mid-
dle-aged white man whose
world has been upended by
economic,culturaland tech-
nologicalchange.
“If every economic issue
is framed asa strugglebe-
tween a hardworking white
middle classand undeserv-
ing minorities, thenwor kers
of allshades will be leftfight-
ing for scraps while the
wealthy withdraw further
into theirprivate enclaves,”
he warned.
Throughout his presi-
dency, Obama has used his
bully pulpit to inspire,con-
demn and cajole. Hewas al-
ways heavily involved in
writing his biggest speeches,
and his team of young
speechwriters spent as

much time with him as did
more senior staff.
Chicago writers have al-
ways been at the heart of his
craft. His earliest message
guru was Chicago political
mastermind David Axelrod,
who helped himcome up
with the“yes, we can” con-
cept that propelled him into
office.Inhissecondterm,his
head speechwriter has been
Chicago native Cody
Keenan, whowor ked with
Obama on the farewell ad-
dress throughout the holi-
days.
“This is where I learned
thatchange only happens
when ordinary people get in-
volved, get engaged and
come toge ther to demand
it,” Obama said of his home-
town. “After eightyears as
your president,I still believe
that.”
Each time Obama men-
tioned his departure from
the White House, the crowd
voiced its object ion. At the
end, he singled out his wife,
Michelle, for being his best
friend androle model. She
was dry-eyed, butdaughter
Malia teared up during the
tribute.
The loudestcheers were
forVicePresidentJoeBiden,
whowas in thefrontrow
with his wife, Jill. Many
Democrats now lookto Bid-
en, who has long champi-
onedthe workingclass,for
wisdomon how to connect
with thedis affected white
malevoters who helped de-
liver the White House for
Trump. Biden hasoffered
advice, but he and Obama in
recentdays have beentryi ng
to turn the focusto a new
generation of leadership.
SomepartsoftheObama
coalitionwere not yet ready
to follow that lead.When a
protester began to shout
during Obama’s speech, the
crowd rose upto drown her
out , in whatmay have been
the loudestchants of the
night.
“Four more years!” they
shouted. “Four more years!”
