contributions to the achievement of Banburismus must not be undervalued.
As more and more bombes came into service, it became simpler and quicker to run all wheel
orders, and so the need to pick out plausible alignments diminished. Mahon records that at the
beginning of July 1943 a new policy ‘not to wait for the Banburismus to come up’ before starting
the bombe runs was introduced, and three weeks later that ‘we have had no Banburismus to
do lately’. Finally abandoned in mid-September 1943, it had earned an honourable retirement.
