award and Pólya prize for his ‘outstanding expository writing’, and has received an honorary Doctor of
Education degree from the University of Bradford.
Stephen Wolfram is a distinguished scientist, inventor, author, and entrepreneur. He is the founder and
CEO of Wolfram Research, creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha, and the Wolfram Language, and
author of A New Kind of Science. His work has led to a series of discoveries about the computational
universe of possible programs; these have not only launched new directions in basic research but also
led to breakthroughs in scientific modelling in physical, biological, and social domains—as well as
defining a broad new basis for technology discovery.
Thomas E. Woolley is Junior Research Fellow in Mathematics at St John’s College, University of Oxford,
and London Science Museum Fellow of Modern Mathematics. His research interests are in biological
pattern formation and mechanisms of cell movement. He was mathematics advisor to the television
show Dara O’Briain’s School of Hard Sums.
