exclusively male community that prizes fraternity, loyalty, and nobility (Figure 7b.4). The moral
authority of the patrilineal allows the show to castigate not only shady male characters but also
unruly ambitious women such as the hostess Miki Fujisawa (Mitsu Dan) and hotelier Natsuko
Hane (Mitsuko Baisho).^21 Armed with his father’s ghostly blessing, Naoki is ruthless in weeding
out what he deems unfit in his rulebook of ethics.
