In the 1920s, when Taiwan was under Japanese occupation, mineral-rich hot springs
discovered in Beitou were used for the convalescence of injured army personnel. In the
1950s, the area turned into an entertainment district for American soldiers. Today, the
district, which is a 20-minute ride from downtown Taipei, attracts those looking for a
slower pace of life, and a touch of village spirit from days gone by.
