POSTCARDS

Hyraxes (also called dassies in southern Africa) look like rodents, but their closest living relatives are
elephants and sea cows

I recently visited Namibia with my wife
and family-in-law. I was born there, but
hadn’t visited for 12 years. Driving
between Swakopmund and Etosha
National Park, we stopped for a picnic
lunch at the majestic Spitzkoppe, an
inselberg (isolated mountain) rising out
of the semi-desert. We explored the
boulder-strewn area, scrambling
around rocky outcrops, surrounded by
nothing but silence and open space.
There were quite a few rock hyraxes,
who have rubbery feet for better grip on
the rocks. This photo reminds me of the
privilege I had to grow up in Namibia,
and the value of time spent with family.

My wife and I were on a voyage
on a small cruise ship around
the coast of Japan. Part of the
trip involved sailing across to
South Korea where we had a
busy day visiting the ancient
temples and sites at Gyeongju.
We stopped for lunch at a
traditional restaurant and
enjoyed a dancing display by
these colourfully dressed
dancers. Even though it was
such a short visit, I found South
Korea fascinating and would
love to return on a longer trip.
