ANCHORED AND DOCKED
On our associate editor’s recent trip to Halong Bay, she came across a view of Halong Bay not many
would have seen. This is the Cua Van Floating Village, which acts as a docking area for the many families
who live on fishing boats. Some of the boats dock every morning to bring fresh fish caught on the boats
to the nearby markets. Other boats, especially those that hold families, dock only once a month. This is
when the families stock up on supplies, like food, gasoline for the generators and other amenities to
help them survive a month on the waters. The women pictured are the ones who help run the markets.
They wash and gut fish and squid, and even shuck oysters for sale. Here they are after the day’s sales,
waiting for the men to finish stocking up their boats before they sail off again to catch more fish for
