he soothing sound of waves

lapping on the beach wakes me

up. For a split second, I can’t

remember where I am. And then

I recall the lovely drive from Colombo to

Kalutara and the palm-lined driveway

to the entrance of the grand Anantara

Kalutara Resort. I had walked to my

villa with every intention of spending

most of my time outdoors, but one

look at the plunge pool and the private

garden attached to the villa told me that

the beach wouldn’t have my undivided

attention. But before I get my fill of both

spaces, I am to experience Anantara’s

brand of Sri Lankan wellness at

Anantara Spa. So, I breakfast on some

fresh fruit and laze in the villa for a

while before I head to the spa.

Drawing from healing traditions

from around the world and with the

intent to harmonise body, mind and

spirit, the spa has six single and four

double treatment suites, a beauty salon,

a yoga pavilion, a reflexology pedicure

area, steam rooms and a beautiful

relaxation area. I sit by a lotus pond

in the relaxation area and flip through

the menu, which features everything

from European spa treatments to

Ayurveda and treatments for kids. The

‘Anantara Signature Massage’ catches

my fancy and I am led to one of the

treatment suites by a smiling therapist,

who puts me at ease at once. I lie down

on the comfortable spa table after the

welcoming ritual, and within minutes,

the therapists massage strokes and the

calming fragrances convince me that I

must close my eyes. Sleep is inevitable.

I walk out of the spa feeling

energised and with an important

decision to make – should I laze by

the river lagoon or sink my feet into

the beach’s sands first? I happily sink

into a comfortable chair on the upper

deck and take in views of the ocean

while I make up my mind.
