Molten Iron
Throwing
Nuanquan, China
Experienced blacksmiths
throw molten iron in a
dazzling shower of light.
Called Da Shuhua, this
practice started over 300
years ago when blacksmiths
decided to find a cheaper
alternative to expensive
firecrackers. By melting iron
at 1,000 degrees celsius
and throwing it against a
stone wall, they create the
same dramatic patterns as a
fireworks display. Don't try
this at home.

Holi Festival
India
Known as the 'festival
of colours', celebrators
rejoice over the triumph of
good over evil by throwing
handfuls of coloured
powder and water at one
another. The meaning of
Holi has changed over time.
The original legend tells
of evil King Hiranyakshyap
who tried to kill his own
son, Prahlad, because he
worshipped Lord Vishnu,
by throwing him into a fire
pit. But, Prahlad was saved
because of his devotion.
