VILLAGE BOYS PADDLE INTO THE RATARGUL SWAMP FOREST
LOCATED ALONG THE GOAIN RIVER, ABOUT 26 KILOMETRES
FROM SYLHET IN BANGLADESH. IT IS ONE OF THE FEW
FRESHWATER SWAMP FORESTS IN THE WORLD. SOME CALL
IT THE “AMAZON OF BANGLADESH”. DURING THE RAINY
SEASON, THE WETLAND IS SUBMERGED IN UP TO 10 METRES
OF WATER. IN WINTER, IT ALMOST DRIES UP COMPLETELY. IT
WAS DECLARED A WILDLIFE SANCTUARY IN 1973

We take a look at art and culture in Asia, from China’s burgeoning film industry, to the looting of artefacts by ISIS, and the organisation
that is preserving Syria’s threatened heritage using digital technology. We will also be introducing our new regular literary column,
written by some of the region’s best authors.
The climate change issue will also be available at ADEX 2017 – dedicated to confronting climate change.
