Yumen Pass, Dunhuang
Yardang National
Geopark
We visit Yumen Pass, or the
“Jade Gate”, named after
the jade trading caravans
that passed through here,
continuing their journey to
India, Parthia and the Roman
Empire. During the Han
Dynasty (202 BC–220 AD),
the Silk Road cut through
this pass; it was the one
road connecting Central
Asia and China – the former
Western Regions, or Xiyu.
We then make our way to the
Dunhuang Yardang National
Geopark to see the unique
rock formations here, which
developed over 700,
years. We spend a second
night in Dunhuang

Lanzhou
We visit the Waterwheel
Expo Garden to learn about
the ancient device that uses
flowing water to generate
power, transferring water
from the Yellow River to
Lanzhou. You can also
experience a traditional
sheepskin rafting trip down
the Yellow River. This raft
has a long history in China;
it was first used by troops as
early as the Han Dynasty to
carry people across rivers.
For our last lunch, we enjoy
a favourite local dish called
Lanzhou beef lamian – a
spicy soup consisting of
sliced beef, radish, chilli
oil and hand-pulled wheat
noodles. We return to
Shanghai, concluding the trip

Mogao Caves
The Mogao Caves, also
known as the “Thousand
Buddha Grottoes”, form a
system of 492 cells and cave
sanctuaries, strategically
located at a religious and
cultural crossroads on the
Silk Road, covering over
1,000 years of Buddhist art.
The cave system houses
about 45,000 square metres
of murals, and more than
2,000 sculptures. The
Mogao Caves are historically
invaluable, combining the
artistic influence of the Turks,
ancient Tibetans and several
Chinese ethnic minorities.
