Achia Khatun, a survivor of Cyclone Aila, took
refuge with her family on the roof of their tin-shed
home. Last year, Achia went to Dhaka to work
as a domestic worker, as there were limited
opportunities in her village. Many underaged girls
go to Dhaka seeking work either in the garment or
domestic help sectors.

A young girl digs deep into soil saturated with
salt water, hoping to find logs to burn as fuel.
Two years on from Cyclone Aila, the communities
along Bangladesh’s southwest coastline are
starting to rebuild their lives. When the storm
struck in May 2009, surges of water up to three
metres high battered the coast along the Bay of
Bengal in Khulna district. Sidr, the worst cyclone
to ever strike the region, had already caused
extensive damage, and Aila easily destroyed
any defences.
