211 University“211 Project”was formally launched in 1995 by the Chinese
government aiming for facilitating the development of Chinese higher education.
Around 100 universities were selected into this project, and titled 211 university
(or 211U). Through two decades of continued government funding, 211Us have
become the research universities in China.
985 University“985 Project”was another national project to develop higher
education, with the aim of building world-class universities. Around 50 uni-
versities were selected into this project, and titled 985 university (or 985U), most
of which are also 211Us. 985Us are the elite universities in China, with the
highest academic level.
Cheung Kong ScholarCheung Kong Scholar Program is a national program to
recruit high-profile scholars worldwide. It was jointly launched by China
Ministry of Education and Li Ka Shing Foundation in 1998. CK scholar is a
great honor for professors in Chinese universities, most of them have a national
or even international reputation.
Jie Qing ScholarNational Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar was set
by National Natural Sciences Foundation of China in 1994, aiming for
rewarding those top young scientists who have the potential to become world
class scholars in the future. This fund is extremely competitive among Chinese
young researchers. And those winners would be titled as Jie Qing scholar (or
JQ).
National Key DisciplineNational Key Discipline is the important base for edu-
cating talents and conducting research in Chinese universities. The number of
NK disciplines that a university holds is an prominent signal of its level.
