sensitive to time, and always in change, whereas count data are easier to obtain and

relatively stable. Moreover, to consider research quality, we also include indicators

such as TOPESI in NEAM disciplines and SSCI in HSS disciplines in the system.

3.2 Status and Change of Research Inputs in 211Us

This section mainly contains three parts as follow. First, we analyze the status and

change of university research inputs in the full sample. Second, we divide the full

sample into two subsamples of 985Us and non-985Us, to do further comparisons.

Third, we divide the full sample by university location into eastern, central and

western, and do further comparisons. Meanwhile, considering that Chinese higher

education resources are much more agglomerated at the Jing-Jin-Ji areas and

Hu-Su-Zhe areas inside eastern China, we subdivide eastern China according to this

criteria, and do further comparisons. In each part of analysis, we present the status

and change of research inputs in NEAM disciplines and HSS disciplines of 211Us

respectively.

in 211Us

3.2.1.1 NEAM Disciplines

We present status and change of research inputs in NEAM disciplines of full sample

by statistics of sum, university average, coefficient of variation. See Table3.3for

details.
From Table3.3, we can obtain threefindings. (1) The indicator of National Key

Disciplines (NK Disciplines) is relatively stable, since the MOE evaluation on

university key disciplines was launched only one time in 2006 during thefive-year

period of 2006–2010. Thus, the university average of NK Disciplines is 6.21 in

2006, and isfixed at 7 hereafter. (2) To the four Human Input indicators such as

Cheung Kong Scholars (CK Scholars), T&R Staff, there is a steadily rising trend

during 2006–2010. (3) To the two Financial Input indicators, R&D Grants and

R&D Grants per capita, there is also a steadily rising trend during 2006–2010.

From the perspective of differences between university inputs, some indicators

such as high-level human resource indicators (namely, CK Scholars and JQ

scholars), National Key Disciplines (NK Disciplines), and R&D Grants, have a

much larger coefficient of variation. While to some general human inputs (namely,

T&R Staff, T&R Staff with Senior Title), andfinancial input controlled for uni-

versity scale (namely R&D Grants per capita), their coefficients of variation are

relatively small. Besides, the coefficient of variation of each indicator is decreasing

year by year.
