fixed at 2.33 hereafter. (2) The university averages of R&D Staff and R&D Staff

with Senior Title are on a steadily rising trend. (3) R&D Grants (current year) is

also on a steadily rising trend by year, but after controlling for the difference on

university scale, the indicator R&D Grant per capita isfluctuant in 2010, but still on

a rising trend by year.

Coefficient of variation reflects the differences between universities. The coef-

ficient of variation of NK Disciplines and R&D Grants are much bigger, while the

coefficient of variation of those input indicators like R&D Staff and R&D Grants

per capita are relatively small. Besides, the coefficient of variation of every input

indicator is on a decreasing trend by year.
It’s much clearer to observe the change of each research input indicator for

211Us through calculating the yearly change rate of university average. The cal-

culations are presented in Table3.6.

It can be seen from Table3.6, that almost every research input indicator of HSS

disciplines is growing from 2007 to 2010, with an exception of R&D Grants per

capita dropping a little in 2010. Relatively speaking, R&D Grants grows much

faster during these years, while the growth rates of R&D Staff and Senior Title are

considerably slow.

In order to illustrate more visually the trend of research inputs in HSS disciplines

in 211Us, we plot the yearly averages of input indicators in line chart. Please see

Figs.3.5,3.6,3.7and3.8.

It can be seen from Figs.3.5and3.6, the university average of R&D staff is

growing steadily, from 374.78 in 2006 to 694.94 in 2010, with a peak of growth
