indicators like CK Scholars and JQ Scholars, the university averages in almost all

areas are increased to some extent, with a much considerable between-area

gap. (3) Concerning the general human resources indicators like T&R Staff and

T&R Staff with Senior Title, they keep stable during thesefive years, due to their

rigid restriction by university scale. (4) Concerning the indicators of R&D Grants

and per capita R&D Grants, their distributions and changes are much more like
those of CK Scholars or JQ Scholars.

In the aspect of yearly change rate of average research input, the between-area

gaps are very substantial. To see this, we calculate the yearly change rate for each

indicator in 2007–2010 and present it in Table3.12.

It can be found from Table3.12, basically, most research input indicators of

211Us in different areas increase across thefive-year period, except that the average

of NK disciplines of JUs drops in 2007, and the averages of T&R Staff with Senior

Title in both HSZUs and western 211Us also drop in 2007.

In order to illustrate more visually the agglomeration phenomenon of research

inputs in NEAM disciplines of 211Us in eastern China, we further divide eastern

China into Jing-Jin-Ji areas, Hu-Su-Zhe areas and other areas. We plot each indi-

cator by location in Figs.3.19,3.20,3.21,3.22,3.23and3.24.

It can be seen from Figs.3.19and3.20, the averages of CK Scholars and JQ

Scholars are all increasing in eastern, central and western 211Us, with a step-wise

decaying trend from the eastern to the western. This observation means that

high-level scientists and researchers mainly gather round eastern China. Inside the

eastern China, it’s obvious that the averages of CK Scholars and JQ Scholars are

increasing in JUs and HSZUs with small between-area gaps but extremely higher

than other 211Us inside eastern China. This means that the high-level researchers

are more likely to gather around Jing-Jin-Ji and Hu-Su-Zhe areas.

It can be seen from Figs.3.21and3.22, during thisfive-year period, the aver-

ages of T&R Staff and T&R Staff with Senior Title of central 211Us are larger than
the those of the eastern and western 211Us, and the averages of eastern 211Us are

slightly larger than those of the western 211Us. Inside eastern 211Us, the averages

of T&R Staff and T&R Staff with Senior Title of JUs are larger than those of

HSZUs and OUs.
