Modern Macau is a place like no other, where Portuguese colonial meets casino glitz,
and sometimes the two merge into a strange architectural hybrid.
The futuristic mirrored-glass side of the city lights up the historical port at night,
and is home to all manner of devilish diversions. But don’t overlook the streets
and alleyways of the older parts of town, routes that offer a rich background to Macau.
Having evolved from a key trading port in the middle of the 16th century
to a colonial dot on the map to a state-of-the-art entertainment center, today’s Macau
still stands out. Success at the gaming tables has attracted every manner and price range of cuisine—
but don’t miss the great Macanese restaurants that blend Portugese and southern Chinese
f lavors. The plethora of Asia’s top sporting events and shows put on here is a strong draw.
But beyond that, and like its Iberian cousins, it’s simply a great place for a stroll.
