ELLORA CAVES
Northeast of Mumbai, the
Ellora Caves are a collection
of superlatives. One of the
largest rock-cut temple caves
in the world, it is also home
to the world’s largest single
monolithic rock excavation,
the Kailasha Temple. With
more than 100 caves in all,
the site is home to Buddhist,
Hindu and Jain monuments on
a scale rarely witnessed. More
than that, the monuments
were excavated out of the
basalt cliffs of the Charanandri
hills in close proximity to one
another as a representation
of religious harmony. Now
a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, the Ellora Caves are an
archaeological reminder of the
grandeur that is India.

SUNDARBANS

NATIONAL PARK
A short 140 kilometers from
the bustle of modern Kolkata,
Sundarbans National Park is
a dense mangrove forest that
is home to the largest reserve
of the Bengal tiger. A wildlife
sanctuary that spans the
Ganges Delta, at the mouth of
the Ganges and Brahmaputra
rivers, it is home to a variety
of other wildlife across more

than 10,000 square kilometers,
one of the largest of India’s
35 UNESCO World Heritage
Sites. Its actual size is in
FRQWLQXDOˊX[DVLWLVVKDSHG
by the changing tides, but
the park remains the largest
mangrove forest in the world,
a key element of the global
environment.

FATEHPUR SIKRI
Close by Delhi, and closer to
Agra and its famed Taj Mahal,
Fatehpur Sikri was the capital
of the Mughal Empire in the
16th century, home to silk
spinners and stone carvers.
Today, Fatehpur Sikri is one of
the best preserved examples
of Mughal architecture in
India. It comes across as a
blend of Persian splendor
and Indian embellishments
preserved in red sandstone,
all with a style all its own. In
use over the centuries since,
modern-day excavations
continue to unearth pieces of
this rich Mughal past, whether
statuary, antique pieces or
the distinctive structures that
all point to an unparalleled
history.
