Loud Shrimp Named
AfterPinkFloyd
UK researchers have
given the name
Synalpheus pinkfloydi to a
newly discovered species of
pistol (or snapping) shrimp
because of its ability to stun
and even kill small prey using
concussive sound. Found off
the coast of Panama, the
shrimp is one of the loudest
aquatic creatures in the
world. By snapping its
distinctive enlarged pink
claw, the shrimp creates a
powerful imploding bubble
that has even been known
to break glass jars. Large
colonies of pistol shrimp can
interfere with underwater
communications and sonar.
