I walked into my dining room with
my toast and coffee one November
morning and noticed a photo frame
had fallen flat. I walked over and put
it back in its place and noticed
another had fallen onto the ground.
As I looked closer, I noticed
footprints. Initially, I panicked,
believing someone had been in my
house, but I soon realised they were
too small to be human. I followed
the trail around my dining room
table, down the steps into the lounge
room and around the open fireplace.
The footprints stopped in the corner
of the lounge room behind my sofa,
and what I found there made me

shriek. There, curled up, fast asleep,
was a possum!
It became obvious that it had fallen
through the chimney, bringing in
soot and spreading it around the
house. Being a nocturnal animal,
it continued to sleep while I made
several calls to find a possum catcher.
Finally, I got in touch with the
‘Possum Lady’ (the name she used
to refer to herself ). She arrived 20
minutes later with a stick, gloves and
hessian bag. Due to the size of the
