WHERE TO STAY
The Collector is a spotless
b&b near the Concertgebouw,
furnished with museum-style
displays of clocks, wooden clogs
and ice skates. The three rooms
have balcony access, breakfast
is make-your-own, and there are

TRANSPORT
KLM flies a direct 13-hour route
from Singapore and Kuala
Lumpur to Amsterdam (from
£622; klm.com). Emirates is
cheaper but includes a stop in
Dubai (from £381; emirates.
com). The airport is eight miles
from Amsterdam city centre;
trains run 24 hours a day from
the airport to Centraal Station
(£4 one way; 17 minutes). Most
public city transport is by tram
(single/day ticket £2.50/6).
Central Amsterdam is easy to
explore on foot, or hire a bike
local-style (from about £9
for 24 hours).
