EASY TRIPS

AYAM PRESTO
Have you ever tried eating a whole
chicken, including its bones? Ayam Presto
is prepared by having chicken cooked in a
pressure cooker for long hours with a
secret blend of ingredients, before being
fried to crispy perfection. Ginger and
turmeric are the only ingredients in the
blend that can be revealed, as the rest
must remain a mystery! This unique soft
bone chicken has consistently delighted
the taste buds of travellers all over the
world so much that there is literally
nothing left after the meal.

PIZZERIA CASA ITALIA
Although Pizzeria Casa Italia is tucked
away in the idyllic Trikora coast, this has
not deterred people from travelling to the
middle of nowhere just to order a
takeaway or two. It serves the gooiest
cheese and the crunchiest thing crust
made from traditional wood fire, as well
as brings a delightful twist to traditional
pizza with localised flavours, such as
Pizza Cornet (corned beef), Pizza Jagung
(corn), Pizza Ayam (chicken) and Pizza
Sosis (chicken sausage).

GONG GONG
The Gong Gong is a type of sea snail found
in the waters around Bintan Island,
commonly boiled to retain the flavours
from the sea. Using a toothpick (instead of
a fork), its meat is taken out from its shell
and then dipped in delectable sauces. It is
so iconic that it now adorns the façade of
the new Tanjung Pinang Tourism
Information Centre.

Local Food Spots/Delights to Try

OTAK OTAK
Made from the catch of local fishermen,
Otak Otak is as fresh as it gets. It is
barbecued over charcoal flames, blended
with spices such as lemongrass, dried
chilli and lime for an extra kick, and then
finally wrapped in banana leaves for
added fragrance. This local orange
delicacy comes in a choice of prawn,
squid or fish meat, and can be found as a
simple yet delicious bite sized snack
along Kawal.

TAPE
Tape (ta-peh) or Tapai (ta-pie) is fermented
tapioca wrapped in banana leaf, and has
an interesting rum taste that is sweet and
slightly sour. Its texture is similar to that of
the durian – the regionally well-known

‘King of Fruits’ – and is a local
delight that can only be found
in Bintan.

SUP IKAN
This fish soup is usually a hot dish made
from mixing fish or seafood with vegetables,
broth, water and other seasoning spices.
There are traditionally two main versions
of this soup, namely a clear broth with a
fragrant finishing that is light and
refreshing, and a thick gravy soup with
heavy spices.

RIMBA JAYA
Although Rimba Jaya is not another dish,
it is a local hangout that comes alive at
night to become a foodie’s paradise. The
Rimba Jaya area is home to a food centre
and a variety of unique cafes, and is sure
to delight and surprise any of its visitors.
Head to the night market for cheap local
delicacies and feast on tender sticks of
satay, fried mushrooms and more. Check
out Bintan’s burgeoning cafe culture too,
and sample Canopy Café’s gourmet
coffee, TOMO Restaurant’s Japanese and
Korean delights, and LOCO Cafe’s
refreshing Taiwanese shaved ice.
FABRICA Bar & Eatery is also a perfect
hangout for bar snacks, a couple of
drinks, and a game of darts.
