THE BIG BLASTS
Some of the biggest volcanic
eruptions in histor y have taken place
in the Ring of Fire. The eruption of
Mount Tambora on the island of
Sumbawa in Indonesia back in 1815
caused 100,000 fatalities. Krakatoa
(between the Indonesian islands Java
and Sumatra) was another violent
eruption; it was 13,000 times more
power ful than the atomic bomb in
Hiroshima. The sound of Krakatoa
exploding was the loudest sound
ever heard – people some 4,800
kilometres away heard the blast!

WHAT TO DO IN
THE EVENT OF AN
EARTHQUAKE

  • Take cover under a strong table and
stay there until the shaking stops.
Aim for a corner in the building

would be more prone to falling

  • If outside, move away from
    tall buildings, trees, streetlights
    and communication wires

  • Stay in an open space until the
    shaking stops. Most casualties
    are caused by collapsing walls
    and falling objec ts

The Alpide belt is the second most
seismically active region where around 17
percent of the planet’s largest earthquakes
occur. This belt stretches from Java to
the northern Atlantic Ocean through the
Himalayas and on to southern Europe.
