GEOTHERMAL
From the Greek word geo meaning
“Ear th” and ther mal meaning “heat”,
you can probably guess where this
energy comes from! The lava we find
in volcanoes, and the steam we get
in natural geysers, are generated
by underground heat. So how do
we tap into this natural heat source
(of around 55 degrees)? Special
pipes reach underground, and are
designed according to three dif ferent
types of power systems: dr y steam,
flash, and binar y. Each system uses
condensed steam and geothermal
fluid to generate heat. In some
places, a natural supply of water
produces steam from hot magma
wells underground, and this is used to
generate geothermal power. Tapping
into geothermal energy is another
sustainable solution to reducing
dependence on fossil fuels.
