this is where the banks make their money,
but interestingly what they are afraid of
is the fact that human beings continue to
put their faith in cash. From the invention
of Pay Pal in the 1990s to the smartphone
app economy that emerged 10 years
later, this is an absorbing chronicle of
how the tech giants invented the digital
payment revolution and what a cashless
future may look like. Sweden plans to
scrap cash by 2025 and already in Holland
you can swipe a beggar’s sleeve to donate
with your card... Riveting, well delivered
journalism. Don’t miss this. Mike Bradley

Billion Dollar Deals and How

Money: Who Wants to Kill It and Why.
More precisely, what Jacques Peretti
(above) explores in this compelling,
cautionary fi lm is the death of cash. In
2015, card and contactless transactions
overtook cash for the fi rst time. Th e
keyword here is “transactions”, since

TV CHOICE

COMEDY DRAMA

Bad Move
ITV, 8pm
Marooned in their awkward rural
surroundings, things get worse for Steve
and Nicky this week when neighbour Grizzo
and his band keep them awake all night
with their ear-shattering rehearsals (not to
mention the sound of helicopters delivering
their Chinese meals from Manchester).
Already haem orrhaging clients, now Steve
gets savaged by peacocks. Quietly funny.

ARCHITECTURE

Grand Designs
Channel 4, 9pm

Th is week a designer couple buy a
crumbling Victorian dairy in south-east
London, which they plan to convert into

a family home while retaining as much of
the “decayed” look as possible. See if they
can create a viable dream home in just six
months on a tight budget of £260K.

COMEDY DRAMA
Doc Martin
ITV, 9pm
Ruth’s had enough of Al and, primarily,
Bert’s business shenanigans. Plus, Louisa
endangers her life at sea and also by
enrolling on a course which threatens to see
the Doc saddled with more domestic duties
than he’d like. Always fun. Mike Bradley

FILM
Suntan
Film4, 11.10pm
(Argyris Papadimitropoulos, 2016)
Th anks to Yorgos Lanthimos (Th e Lobster)
et al, a new Greek generation is prominent
on the world fi lm scene, often labelled the
“Weird Wave”. But there’s nothing weird
about Suntan – this superb, unsettling fi lm
simply digs deep into the abysses (and the
shallows) of human weakness. Kostis (Makis
Papadimitriou), a tubby, melancholic, middle-
aged doctor, starts a new life practising on
the island of Antiparos. But then the holiday
season comes, bringing hedonistic young
revellers, among them sun-worshipping
Anna (Elli Tringou). She doesn’t seem to
mind that she has a besotted new admirer,
but summer soon takes a dark turn, as you
might expect from what’s essentially an
ouzo-steeped update of Th e Blue Angel. All

the more painful because it’s so beautifully
shot, with Papadimitriou’s fearless
performance at its centre. Jonathan Romney

Radio 3, 10pm
Originally broadcast in abbreviated form
as an interval feature during this year’s
Proms, this discussion between Anne
McElvoy and author Alan Hollinghurst in
front of an audience at London’s Imperial
College is well worth hearing in full. Th e
focus is his multi-generational new novel
Th e Sparsholt Aff air. Hollinghurst says it
is only during conversations like this that
he realises what his own novels are about
and McElvoy cleverly steers things so
that they address key themes including
the intersection of public and private lives
and the impossibility of really knowing
what happened in the past. A stimulating
programme also explores his interest in
gay literary criticism. Stephanie Billen
