he senses that the president has “made

via careful political manipulation of
course. In the southern Siberian republic
of Tuva he spends time with nomads
(above), is saddened to hear that “alcohol
abuse in Russia is a national emergency”
and looks on as a shaman hurls one man’s
alcoholism out of the window. Later, in
Stavropol, he fi nds that Cossack warriors
are providing the emblem for Putin’s
new values. All this plus a former traffi c
cop hailed as the new Christ. Quite a
programme. Excellent. Mike Bradley

Beginning in Irkutsk, he witnesses the

DOCUMENTARY

Channel 4, pm
Charlie (above), a two-year-old British
short-haired cat is assessed for a possible
hip-replacement; border collie Buzz is

mysterious lump on his ankle; and golden
labrador Pebbles has a strange swelling
on her side – now she has stopped eating
and the vets race to diagnose the problem.
Turns out labradors aren’t that bright...

FOOD

Th e Big Family Cooking Showdown
BBC2, 8pm

Th e Boyes family from Liverpool go
head to head with the Rignalls from
Buckinghamshire in a bid to reach the

semi-fi nals. Really, tonight could be
accurately described as an almighty
“curry-off ”, with dazzling skills on display
as chicken curry does battle with chicken
tikka masala. Spectacular desserts, too.

DOCUMENTARY
Gypsy Kids: Our Secret World
Channel 5, 10pm
Ben is attacked again at his new school
which tempts him to give up on education
and Margaret’s family go on a pilgrimage to
to the holy Irish mountain of Croagh Patrick
to pray for good fortune. Mike Bradley

FILM
Altman
Sky Arts, 9pm, 3.15am
(Ron Mann, 2014)
Th ere’s surely never been a fi lm-maker like
Robert Altman – who else has managed to
capture the public imagination while being
so radically experimental, or mapped the
diverse regions of American culture over
decades while also looking imaginatively
beyond the Atlantic? And who else has
sloughed off several egregious failures
with such irrepressible insouciance? Ron
Mann’s documentary is a comprehensive
history of the man’s career, his rebel stance
and his often diffi cult character – his wife
Kathryn and his sons make it clear that he
tended to put work fi rst. With testimonies
from assorted luminaries – including
James Caan, Elliott Gould, Julianne Moore
and Lily Tomlin – this is only spoiled by

irksome inserts in which the stars give their
interpretations of the term “Altmanesque”.
It’s more fun arriving at your own defi nition,
and you will. Jonathan Romney

RADIO
Liam Williams: Ladhood
Radio 4, 11pm
Liam Williams (BBC3’s Pls Like) returns
with more semi-autobiographical comedy,
this time focusing on his time at Cambridge
as a lower-middle-class state school
boy from Leeds “where the men are hard
and the women are also hard”. Th e fi rst of
four instalments fi nds him surrounded by
people with the kind of names that would
prompt Dennis the Menace to set his dog
on them. It is hard not to concur with his
mother’s fervent: “Ooh, it is a diff erent
world!”, fi rst uttered when she spies a
Waitrose there. Witty and self-referential,
the comedy also has plenty of heart,
exploring his confl icted emotions with
sensitivity. Stephanie Billen
