the downside, there’s a lot to establish
in the opening episode – everyone’s
character and everyone’s price – and it’s
important you don’t miss vital details.
Th e plot is based on a recent scandal
involving a battle for the acquisition of
20 acres of land in the seaside town of
Ostia. Gay gangsters, orgiastic cardinals,
a chief psycho called Samurai , random
ultraviolence, vendettas at every turn
and powerful, sultry madonnas barely
managing to keep the peace, this is a
swaggering crimefest that brims with
braggadocio. Compelling. Mike Bradley

Netfl ix

“Church. State. Family. Nothing is sacred”
runs the tagline used to promote this
attractively unhinged Italian crime thriller
set on the mean streets of Rome in 2008.
It’s a glorious, and typically stylish, collision
of the Vatican, the state and organised
crime, all of which are seethingly corrupt
and hellbent on a quest for power. On

Have I Got News For You
BBC1, 9pm
Better than all the other satirical news
quizzes put together, HIGNFY returns for a
new season with an opening edition chaired
by one of the most skilful quizmasters on
the rota in the form of DJ, comedian and
questionable singer Alexander Armstrong,
who will have no trouble quelling the
cantankerous antics of regulars Paul
Merton and Ian Hislop and their guests.

DOCUMENTARY

Nile Rodgers: How to Make
It in the Music Business
BBC4, 9pm

If anyone is qualifi ed to dispense sound
advice on this subject it’s genial producer,

guitarist and Chic frontman Rodgers. In the
fi rst of three programmes he reveals the
moment he fi rst picked up a guitar and
the inspiration behind many of his hits,
including Le Freak and Lost in Music.

Th e Graham Norton Show

FILM
Th e Beguiled
Sky Cinema Greats, 10.25pm
(Don Siegel, 1971)
Remade this year by Sofi a Coppola, with
Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, this chamber
melodrama set during the American civil war
is well worth rediscovering in its original form,
because Siegel’s version is so much darker
and more complex. Clint Eastwood plays a
wounded Union soldier given shelter and TLC
at a young ladies’ seminary in Mississippi.
Geraldine Page is the principal, Elizabeth
Hartman the teacher whose reserve melts
as passions run high over their guest’s,
ahem, leg. With Bruce Surtees’s photography
establishing the hothouse atmosphere that
Coppola recreated so studiously, Siegel’s
fi lm off ers a richer brew, including an incest
back story, a more calculating streak to
Eastwood’s character and a slavery theme,

with Mae Mercer as maid Hallie (erased from
the remake) emerging as one of the most
forceful players. Jonathan Romney

RADIO
Selling Barbara
Radio 4, 11am
Th e death of poppy seller Olive Cooke led
to charities being accused of harassing
vulnerable, elderly people for donations.
Here producer Lydia Th omas teams up with
90-year-old Barbara Smith to discover
why her name is being “bandied about”,
as she puts it, by the charities she supports.
Barbara is angry but the programme is non-
sensationalist, introducing her to charity
representatives with a view to facilitating
honest conversations about fund-raising.
Along the way we hear from Smile Train, who
shared Barbara’s data but has since stopped
the practice, and from Michael Grade, chair
of the Fundraising Regulator, about new
rules designed to rebuild trust between
donors and charities. Stephanie Billen
